Vegetarian Heart Health and Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is produced by the human body and is necessary for the basic functioning of cells. CoQ10 is a compound found in the energy-producing center of the cell, mitochondria, and is involved in making adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP serves as the cell’s major energy source and drives many biological processes.  CoQ10 helps boost energy, enhances the immune system, and acts as an antioxidant.

In some clinical research studies, CoQ10 supplementation has shown to protect against heart disease, help lower blood pressure, help support heart health in diabetes, and in periodontal (gum) disease supplements or oral rinse caused faster healing and tissue repair. Preliminary research also suggests that CoQ10 helps reduce damage from stoke, helps boost athletic performance, increase sperm motility and enhances physical activity and exercise tolerance in people with fatigue syndromes and muscular dystrophy.
CoQ10 is produced is small amounts by our bodies and the rest is synthesized from the foods we eat or supplements we take. There are multiple dietary sources of CoQ10 for vegetarians including eggs, spinach, broccoli, peanuts, wheat germ and whole grains. Although there are larger amount of CoQ10 found in non-vegetarian sources of food (oily fish, liver, and other meats).

Vegetarians should consider taking CoQ10 supplements due to the lower amount of CoQ10 found in our dietary sources (as opposed to non-vegetarians) and for the many health benefits described above, especially heart health.

There is no recommended dietary allowance for CoQ10, although suggested dosages for adults 19 and older is 30 to 200 mg daily. CoQ10 is fat-soluble and should be taken with meals containing fat for optimal absorption. Also taking CoQ10 sublingually or at night may help with the body’s ability to use it. CoQ10 is not recommended for children under 18 and its use in children should only be under the supervision of a health care provider. CoQ10 is also used as an oral mouth rinse for gum disease. Rinse with 1 teaspoonful (5 mL), 1 - 2 times daily.
