Blue Cohosh, also known as Caulophyllum thalictroides, is native to North America. The roots of this flower are used medicinally. It has used traditionally by Native Americans to induce labor and menstruation and to treat painful periods.
The active element of blue cohosh is a saponin, called caulosaponin, which is believed to stimulate uterine contraction, although there has been no research to support it’s use with reproductive issue’s.
Blue cohosh should be taken according to the manufacturer’s directions. It is generally taken as a tincture 1 to 2 ml three times per day. Whole herb can be taken 300 to 1,000 mg per day. Side effects associated with blue cohosh when it is taken in large amounts is nausea, headache and high blood pressure. It should only be taken under medical supervision and should especially not be taken by children, pregnant or breast-feeding moms unless under medical supervision.
